Wiley Drayton O'Shields

Wiley Drayton O'Shields Born 1832 and died 1882. He was born in walnut grove Spartanburg County S.C . He lived on the O'Shields Plantation 272 acres of land. He was only 50 years old at his death. Mr. O'Shields played in the O'Shields String Band. Wiley Drayton O'Shields was married to Julia Smith. He was the daddy of W.G.S. O'Shields. Mr. O'Shields was a farmer and he loved people. His mothers name was Nancy Ann O'Shields. His mother was born in Spartanburg County S.C. in the year 1804' August 17. Wiley Drayton O'Shields Was my great grandaddy. As you young researchers read this i sure hope that you get a clear picture of this O'Shields family. As in a lot of families if you do very much research then you will see things that you don't like. But as you keep going on down history road you will see so much more that you do like. So just stay with me as i bring out this history about this family with the truth which i'am sure that is what most of us want. Wiley Drayton O'Shields enlisted in the confederate army when he was 31 years of age. At the time' it was the year 1861' on December 29. He was discharged from service on April 5' 1862. Because of his medical discharge. Wiley Drayton O'Shields owned lot's of land. He was a man that would buy land and sell land that he owned on Blackstock road. Mr. O'Shields owned several hundred acres of land. The more that i have learned the more i enjoy doing what i'am doing. Wiley Drayton O'Shields was married to Julia Smith in 1851. She was the daughter of Enoch and Abigail Elder Smith. Yes this is history in the making. Let me name all the children that were born in their home. James Monroe O'Shields' son' born June 12' 1852; Franklin M. O'Shields' son' born September 7' 1853; Robert Belton O'Shields' son' born September 8' 1855; Enoch Thomas O'Shields' son' born January 6' 1858; Giddeon Henry O'Shields' son' born January 30th 1859 and died as an infant on April 7th 1859. Henry Westel O'Shields' son' born May 8th' 1860. And Wiley George Simpson O'Shields' son' born April 6th 1863. This is the list of the children of Wiley Drayton O'Shields and Julia Smith O'Shields. There's so much to tell about great grandaddy i know that i can't ever tell it all. But i want to put a lot of this down for my children and grandchildren and for the young researchers out there that are doing research on the O'Shields. This is why that i hope to do this with the help of God. And i hope that this will help you as i have researched this and i have been doing this for a long time.

W.G.S O'SHIELDS


W.G.S O'Shields was born 1863 and died 1938 at the age of 75. He played a fiddle in the O'Shields String Band. Mr. O'Shields was a kind and gentle person who loved being around people. Mr. O'Shields was married to Annie Hyatt she was born 1865 and she died 1928 at the age of 63 years of age. Mr. O'Shields was the youngest son of Wiley Drayton O'Shields and Julia Smith O'Shields. This was my grandaddy and my grandmother, Mr. O'Shields could write with both hands and talk all at the same time or this has been told to be the truth. He could draw anything that he wanted to draw. I never did get to really get to know them since they both died before i was born. But it seems as if i have known them all my life. I know this i'am looking for the day that i will see them both. We can talk about a family reunion and they are great but just wait till we get home what a day that will be. When we see our love ones that have gone on before. Grandaddy was County Auditor for many years in Spartanburg County Court House S.C. He lived on a large Plantantion 272 acres of land. Now that is a lots of land to farm. Rites planned today for W.G.S. O'Shields' County Auditor for many years. This is the way that this was written in the Spartanburg newspaper' 1938. Funeral Services for W.G.S. O'Shields' 75' Spartanburg County Auditor for many years' who died yesterday will be conducted 3;30 O'Clock this afternoon at Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church by Rev. H.B. Hardy' Rev. C.B. Prince and the Rev. C.E. Vermillion. Nephews will serve as active pallbearers. A burial will be held in the church cemetery. Mr. O'Shields died at 4;20 yesterday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. C.M. Senn. at 164 Branch Street. Death ended a long illness' the last three monts of Mr. O'Shields life being spent in bed. A native and life long resident of the county' Mr. O'Shields was county auditor for thirty --two and one half years' and was employed in various capacities by the county for more than forty--five years. Before being elected to the office of auditor he served as Magistrate Clerk of the Probate Judge's office and as clerk in the treasure's office. He was the son of the late Wiley Drayton and Julia Smith O'Shields and was born reared in the Walnut Grove section. Before entering public office' he was engaged in farming for a number of years. Since being succeeded to the office of auditor four years ago by the present incumbent' Harold Murph' he had made his home with his daughter' Mrs. Senn. Surving are four children' Mrs. Senn' Manley W. O'Shields both of the city' Wallace M. O'Shields of Pauline' and D.L. O'Shields of Greenville; twenty--seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and a brother; H.W. O'Shields of Pauline. this is the way that it was in the paper in 1938. I want to say that i have two baby brothers and a baby sister that are buried right next to grandaddy and grandmother's grave site there are no markers but i have been told by family members that they are buried there.
